1 Corinthians 13
1. Though I speak with the tongues
of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding
brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2. And though I have the gift
of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge;
and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains,
and have not love, I am nothing.
3. And though I bestow all my
goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned,
and have not love, it profiteth me nothing.
4. Love suffereth long, and is kind; love envieth
not; love vaunteth not itself, is not
puffed up,
5. Doth not behave itself unseemly,
seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked,
thinketh no evil;
6. Rejoiceth
not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the
truth;
7. Beareth
all things, believeth all things, hopeth
all things, endureth all things.
8. Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;
whether there be tongues, they shall
cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9. For we know in part, and we
prophesy in part.
10. But when that which is perfect
is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a
child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12. For now we see through a glass,
darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall
I know even as also I am known.
13. And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of
these is love.
The family is a divinely-appointed
institution. Marriage is meant only between a man and a woman.
Genesis 2
1. Thus the heavens and the earth
were finished, and all the host of them.
2. And on the seventh day God
ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh
day from all his work which he had made.
3. And God blessed the seventh
day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from
all his work which God created and made.
4. These are the generations of
the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day
that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5. And every plant of the field
before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before
it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth,
and there was not a man to till the ground.
6. But there went up a mist from
the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7. And the Lord God formed man
of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8. And the Lord God planted a
garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
xxx
15. And the Lord God took
the man, and put him into the garden
of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16. And the Lord God commanded
the man, saying, Of every tree of the
garden thou mayest freely eat:
17. But of the tree of the knowledge
of good and evil, thou shalt not eat
of it: for in the day that thou eatest
thereof thou shalt surely die.
18. And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him
an help meet for him.
19. And out of the ground the
Lord God formed every beast of the field,
and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what
he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature,
that was the name thereof.
20. And Adam gave names to all
cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and
to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found
an help meet for him.
21. And the Lord God caused a
deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of
his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22. And the rib, which the Lord
God had taken from man, made he a woman,
and brought her unto the man.
23. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall
be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24. Therefore shall a man leave
his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and
they shall be one flesh.
25. And they were both naked,
the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Sexual purity before and during marriage is
God's commandment. Infidelity is a sin and will destroy the intimate
bonds between a husband and wife.
Proverbs
5
15. Drink waters out
of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
16. Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters
in the streets.
17. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers with thee.
18. Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of
thy youth.
19. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts
satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her
love.
20. And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman,
and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
Fidelity
between a husband and wife honors God.
Malachi 2
14. Yet ye say, Wherefore?
Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of
thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is
she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
15. And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit.
And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore
take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against
the wife of his youth.
16. For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting
away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord
of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not
treacherously.
17. Ye have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein
have we wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is
good in the sight of the Lord, and he delighteth in them; or,
Where is the God of judgment?
Biblical ground for divorce is severely limited. Divorce is merely
an accommodation to men and women's hardness of heart.
Matthew 5
31. It hath been said,
Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing
of divorcement:
32. But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife,
saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery:
and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Matthew 19
1. And it came to
pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed
from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
2. And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.
3. The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying
unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every
cause?
4. And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that
he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
5. And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother,
and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?
6. Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore
God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
7. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing
of divorcement, and to put her away?
8. He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts
suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it
was not so.
9. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except
it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery:
and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery
Malachi 2
16. For the Lord, the
God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth
violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore
take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
I Corinthians
7
.15. But if the unbelieving
depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage
in such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
Some practical advice for spouses
and unmarried persons
I Corinthians 7
1. Now concerning the things whereof
ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication,
let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her
own husband.
3. Let the husband render unto
the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the
husband.
4. The wife hath not power of
her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath
not power of his own body, but the wife.
5. Defraud ye not one the other,
except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves
to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt
you not for your incontinency.
6. But I speak this by permission,
and not of commandment.
7. For I would that all men were
even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one
after this manner, and another after that.
8. I say therefore to the unmarried
and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I.
9. But if they cannot contain,
let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
10. And unto the married I command,
yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart
from her husband:
11. But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband:
and let not the husband put away his wife.
12. But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth
not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her
away.
13. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased
to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
14. For
the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving
wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean;
but now are they holy.
15. But if the unbelieving depart,
let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in
such cases: but God hath called us to peace.
16. For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt
save thy husband? or how knowest
thou, O man, whether thou shalt save
thy wife?
17. But as God hath distributed
to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk.
And so ordain I in all churches.
18. Is any man called being circumcised?
let him not become uncircumcised. Is
any called in uncircumcision? let
him not be circumcised.
19. Circumcision is nothing, and
uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping
of the commandments of God.
20. Let every man abide in the
same calling wherein he was called.
21. Art thou called being a servant?
care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.
22. For he that is called in the
Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's
freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's
servant.
23. Ye are bought with a price;
be not ye the servants of men.
24. Brethren, let every man, wherein
he is called, therein abide with God.
25. Now concerning virgins I have
no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that
hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.
26. I suppose therefore that this
is good for the present distress, I say, that
it is good for a man so to be.
27. Art thou bound unto a wife?
seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed
from a wife? seek not a wife.
28. But and if thou marry, thou
hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless
such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.
29. But this I say, brethren,
the time is short: it remaineth, that
both they that have wives be as though they had none;
30. And they that weep, as though
they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced
not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not;
31. And they that use this world,
as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth
away.
32. But I would have you without
carefulness. He that is unmarried careth
for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the
Lord:
33. But he that is married
careth for the things that are of the
world, how he may please his wife.
34. There is difference also between
a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth
for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body
and in spirit: but she that is married careth
for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
35. And this I speak for your
own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that
which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without
distraction.
36. But if any man think that he behaveth himself
uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age,
and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth
not: let them marry.
37. Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart,
having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath
so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.
38. So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
39. The wife is bound by the law
as long as her husband liveth; but if
her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she
will; only in the Lord.
40. But she is happier if she
so abide, after my judgment: and I think
also that I have the Spirit of God.
Marriage is meant only for a man
and a woman who are both believers in Christ.
2 Corinthians 6
14. Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for
what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and
what communion hath light with darkness?
15. And what concord hath Christ
with Belial? or what part hath he that
believeth with an infidel?
16. And what agreement hath the
temple of God with idols? for
ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will
dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and
they shall be my people.
17. Wherefore come out from among
them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean
thing; and I will receive you.
18. And will be a Father unto
you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Loving, sacrificial headship of
men and the gracious submission of women; love is the deepest need
of a woman, while respect is a man's deepest need.
Ephesians 5
21. Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
22. Wives, submit yourselves unto
your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
23. For
the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head
of the church: and he is the saviour
of the body.
24. Therefore as the church is
subject unto Christ, so let the wives be
to their own husbands in every thing.
25. Husbands, love your wives,
even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26. That he might sanctify and
cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27. That he might present it to
himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any
such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28. So ought men to love their
wives as their own bodies. He that loveth
his wife loveth himself.
29. For
no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth
and cherisheth it, even as the Lord
the church:
30. For we are members of his
body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31. For
this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall
be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32. This is a great mystery: but
I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33. Nevertheless let every one
of you in particular so love his wife even as himself;
and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Duties of parents to the children
Colossians 3
18. Wives, submit yourselves unto
your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19. Husbands, love your wives,
and be not bitter against them.
20. Children, obey your parents
in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
21. Fathers, provoke not your
children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
22. Servants, obey in all things
your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice,
as menpleasers; but in singleness of
heart, fearing God:
23. And whatsoever ye do, do it
heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
24. Knowing that of the Lord ye
shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the
Lord Christ.
25. But he that doeth wrong shall
receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect
of persons.
Practical
effects of a woman's submission to an unbelieving husband, and
a man's duty to honor his wife
1 Peter 3
1. Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any
obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the
conversation of the wives;
2. While they behold your chaste
conversation coupled with fear.
3. Whose adorning let it not be
that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of
gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4. But let it be the hidden man
of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament
of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great
price.
5. For after this manner in the
old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
6. Even as Sara obeyed Abraham,
calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well,
and are not afraid with any amazement.
7. Likewise, ye husbands, dwell
with them according to knowledge, giving honour
unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together
of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
8. Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love
as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
9. Not rendering evil for evil,
or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that
ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.
Sanctity of sex within marriage
Hebrews 13
4. Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers
and adulterers God will judge.
Song of Solomon
4
1 Behold, thou art
fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within
thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount
Gilead.
2. Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which
came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none
is barren among them.
3. Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely:
thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
4. Thy neck is
like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there
hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
5. Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which
feed among the lilies.
6. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get
me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.
7. Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
8. Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon:
look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon,
from the lions' dens, from the mountains of the leopards.
9. Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast
ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy
neck.
10. How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better
is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all
spices!
11. Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk
are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the
smell of Lebanon.
12. A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up,
a fountain sealed.
13. Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits;
camphire, with spikenard,
14. Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees
of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:
15. A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams
from Lebanon.
16. Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden,
that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into
his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.
